Megalodons are the biggest single payday in the game, and they are not luck alone — the fight is winnable every time once you know the rule.
When they show up
Megalodons start appearing after your 25th career catch. From then on, every cast has a 3% chance of hooking one instead of a fish. There is no cooldown and no daily limit, so the more you cast, the more you will see.
Winning the fight
The fight runs 20 seconds. A green zone moves along the bar and your job is to keep the marker inside it.
- You do not need to stay inside the whole time
- You are allowed 2 seconds outside the zone, total
- That budget is cumulative — it never resets mid-fight
That last point is the one that catches people out. Drifting out four times for half a second each is exactly as fatal as one long two-second slip.
What it pays
The purse scales with the water you are fishing, so a Megalodon at a late location pays dramatically more than one at Willow Pond. It is worth roughly 90 seconds of normal fishing income wherever you are — plus a large XP payout that makes Megalodons the single fastest way to climb the career ranks.
There is also a 1 in 4 chance of finding a species you have not caught yet in its belly, which makes them one of the better ways to fill in a stubborn fishdex page.
